University of the Arts Establishes “Berny Brownstein Visiting Creators Fund”

PHILADELPHIA, PA – January 25, 2018 – Berny Brownstein, Founder and Chief Creative officer of Brownstein Group, was honored last night by University of the Arts (UArts) with the creation of a “Visiting Creators Fund”. The fund, established for students pursuing careers in the commercial arts, will bring in legendary experts, agency owners and CMOs from across the country to impart lessons from their lives and contextualize their experiences, creating a hub of learning that will churn out the next generation of talent impacting Philadelphia.

A 1957 graduate of UArts, Berny founded Brownstein Group at the height of the Creative Revolution and has since dedicated his life and career to creating campaigns that cut through the clutter of advertising mediocrity and command attention. Over more than half a century in advertising, Berny has sought to consistently evolve the creative process, and this Visiting Creators Fund will further that pursuit by refreshing the student experience with new experts, new approaches and new ideas.

“My father Berny is the consummate artist – a man of vision and imagination,” said Marc Brownstein, whose gift made possible the Visiting Creators Fund. “With this initiative, Berny has opted not for his own legacy, but for propping up future leaders by giving them the chance to give their art real-world application. He understands that his work (and the work of others) can have impact outside of a studio or gallery.”

With more than 30 majors, 30 minors and 13 graduate programs in visual arts, performing arts, design and liberal studies, UArts develops alumni who are not only leaders in their disciplines, but also creative thinkers able to succeed in any path they choose. The Visiting Creators Fund will live in perpetuity, and will benefit future generations of students who see art as exciting in the “real world” and want to be a part of it.

“How lucky am I?” asked Berny to a packed audience during an event held at Hamilton Hall on the University of the Arts Broad Street campus. “When I look back on my career – from starting out as a layout artist to maturing as part of the global firm of NW Ayer to creating Brownstein Group – it’s been my love of art and the creative process that has sustained me. I’m just a public school kid from Philly who was lucky enough to get an art scholarship; and look how far it’s taken me.”
