Brownstein Group and City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program Team Up to Unveil Berny Brownstein’s Largest Masterpiece

PHILADELPHIA (July 19, 2016) – Brownstein Group Founder and Chairman Berny Brownstein has been called many things over the course of his nearly 60-year career. “The King of Broad Street.” “The Dean of Philadelphia Advertising.” And now, thanks to the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia, Brownstein can add muralist to that illustrious list. Brownstein’s first ever mural will be unveiled on Thursday, July 21 at the corner of 23rd and Sansom Streets at 6:00 pm.

“I’ve always said that life is about reaching people and motivating them and I have tried to do that in my career as both an ad man and an artist,” said Berny Brownstein. “For the past decade I have been honored to partner with the Mural Arts program on a business level, helping them to reach hundreds of thousands of people and motivate them to be conduits for change. And now that one of my personal works of art will be on display in my hometown for all to enjoy…well that’s something that’s extremely special to me.”

The mural, titled “Wild Tuscan Lilies,” was painted by Brownstein on a visit to Tuscany and showcases the picturesque Tuscan landscape with its rolling plains, olive groves and wineries stretching as far as the eye can see.

“Berny has been at the center of the arts and business community in Philadelphia for nearly 60 years,” said Brownstein Group CEO and President Marc Brownstein. “For those of us that have been lucky enough to work with him, we have seen first hand how he can bring a campaign, canvas or tagline to life. And now, thanks to the Mural Arts Program, Berny can share his artistic gift and vision with a whole new audience.”

After graduating from the University of the Arts, Brownstein began working as an art director at N.W. Ayer and eventually founded Brownstein Group in the living room of his home in 1964. He went on to develop campaigns for corporate giants such as Zenith, United Airlines, Chrysler Corporation, AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Caterpillar Equipment and IKEA, but has always been an artist at heart, showcasing many of his paintings at various galleries in the Philadelphia area.

“We are delighted to have worked with the extraordinary artist and creative thinker Berny Brownstein on his first mural,” said Jane Golden, Executive Director, City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. “Mural Arts believes deeply that all people deserve access to world-class art, and we are thrilled that this wonderful piece of his work will be displayed in Center City for all to enjoy.”

Berny and Brownstein Group have been long time supporters of the arts in Philadelphia, specifically the Mural Arts Program. For nearly 10 years, BG has worked closely with the Program to tell its unique story and give it a stronger voice in the Greater Philadelphia area. A member of the MAP Board of Directors, the agency and its leaders were recognized for their continued commitment at the 2011 Wall Ball, the organization’s annual fundraiser.

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (Mural Arts) is the nation’s largest public art program, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change. For 30 years, Mural Arts has united artists and communities through a collaborative process, rooted in the traditions of mural-making, to create art that transforms public spaces and individual lives. Mural Arts engages communities in 50 to 100 public art projects each year, and maintains its growing collection through a restoration initiative. Core Mural Arts programs, such as Art Education, Restorative Justice, and Porch Light, yield unique, project-based learning opportunities for thousands of youth and adults.
