Did I Really Post That?!: Social Media Sobriety Test
Ever posted a scornful message to your ex-boyfriend's Facebook
wall or uploaded something seriously scandalous to YouTube? Well, I
may not be guilty of those exact crimes, but I have witnessed the
fallout when it has happened to friends - and although it is
somewhat entertaining to witness the fallout (and all the
comments!) there's now a Firefox plugin called "The
Social Media Sobriety Test" to mitigate the damage! As a PR
person, I am all about damage control and protecting the brand -
and that should include your personal brand, too!
Just last week, web security company Webroot released the plugin
with the tagline, "Nothing good happens online after 1 a.m." It's
simple, download the plugin and customize the settings for a
variety of social media sites - from Facebook to Twitter to e-mail
accounts like Gmail or Hotmail. The Social Media Sobriety Test
extension is half ingenious and half extremely clever marketing on
behalf of its parent company Webroot, which specializes in computer
security suites.

Here's the deal: Set your party-time hours, and if you try to
sign on to one of those sites during those times, you'll be asked
to pass a test like following a finger drifting around the screen
with your mouse or indicating which side of the screen is blinking
in a "Simon Says" like puzzle. I should remind you that a tool like
this is simply a fun diversion to give you a good laugh! But more
importantly, it is a great (and fun) example of viral marketing and
I have to give kudos to Webroot - I think we'll be hearing a lot
more from them after this move!
